The people in the book

"A keen observer of and cogent communicator about all the recent changes in Chinese society, Max feels that a downside of China’s rapid economic development has been the deterioration of the nation’s spirituality. Max confided that he would like to believe in something, but he can’t figure out what. He believes he is “too old for that now” (this sentiment struck me as odd, coming from a 30-year-old). However, Max’s apparent apathy regarding his own belief proves his point - many younger Chinese have forgotten or never learned about their cultural and spiritual roots. He does believe his society’s ‘spiritual side’ will return someday, along with more ‘open communication.’ He dreams of having more than one child and traveling around the world, and remains optimistic that those dreams are still within reach."
