"I knew Andrew had graduated in 1989, a crucial time in China’s development. I was curious to hear his perspective on the events of that summer. The ease with which Andrew reminisced about those events surprised me. He vividly recalled how thousands of students descended on Beijing in the months prior to that summer, some merely curious but others excitedly optimistic about change. His father strongly warned him against participating in those momentous events in Beijing as did his girlfriend (now his wife). Andrew supported what he calls ‘the good intentions’ of the movement, but on 20 May of that year, he decided to return to Tianjin. Today, as a well-respected member of the Communist Party, Andrew still believes in gradual change; “That will be much faster,” he says."
